La Spezia lays at the outermost East of Liguria, a few kilometres from the boundary of Tuscany, in the middle of a deep natural gulf which gives its name.

Vista della Spezia This gulf, also known by the nickname of “Golfo dei Poeti” (Gulf of poets), is surrounded by a hill chain, whose most imposing top is mount Parodi, which is located near the western suburbs of the town. The gulf has an area of about 150 hectares, and is closed by an offshore dam which is long about 2,210 metres. The gulf inlet is 4.6 kilometres in length and 3.2 kilometres in width. The city stands therefore on a narrow strip of land sandwiched between sea and mountain; direct consequence of this is the presence of several hilly districts and a rather irregular urban map, which in the Twenties required even the excavation of the “Collina dei Cappuccini” (Hill of the Capuchins), where currently lays Piazza Europa, to allow the eastward development of the Old Town, towards the “Piano di Migliarina”, being the west area already taken by the Military Arsenal. This town planning development required a massive reclamation work; actually, where today stands most of the port was once an immense wetland area, known as “Stagnoni” (Big Ponds). For the peculiar shape of its gulf, repaired by the fury of storm surges and hypothetical enemy attacks, in La Spezia was built one of the largest Navy’s arsenals and, over the years, one of the major cargo ports of the Mediterranean Sea.
