The territory of the Municipality of Genoa spreads over 243 sq km, and consists of a thin coastal belt at whose shoulders stand hills and mountains, some of which of remarkable height.

Genoa The coastline from Vesima to Capolungo, is about 42 km long and is oriented towards ESE by WNW. Excluding the small hamlets of Vesima and Crevari, Genoa geographically belongs to the “Riviera di Levante” (Eastern Riviera). Halfway between Vesima and Capolungo opens the natural amphitheatre of the harbour of Genoa, surrounded on the west side by the “collina di San Benigno” (hill of San Benigno), partially demolished during Fascist era to enlarge the harbour area), and on the east by the hill which from Carignano rises to up to Righi joining, at the Forte Sperone, the San Benigno one. Outside of the two buttresses flow the two main streams of the city: the Bisagno on east side, which ends its race in the Foce area; and the Polcevera on west side, which separates Sampierdarena and Cornigliano. In this way five zones are outlined: the town centre, the Valpolcevera; the Valbisagno; the West Side and the East Side.
